 Arsenal fans, like me and my colleague Rayed, this season have experienced a series of emotions. From the highs of smashing Fenerbache, Sheffield United, Blackburn and Porto, to the lows of playing poorly against weaker teams such as Fulham, Hull and now Stoke.

This is an emotional rollercoaster that does not do justice to the Arsenal fan, who got so close last season. It simply doesn’t make sense to be doing extremely well against decent teams, but faltering against arguably much weaker opposition. There must be some fundamental problems and I think I know what they are.

These boys can’t defend a set piece or long ball if it meant their life. I mean for Pete’s sake, can you make your weakness any more obvious to your rivals? This is the exact technique Stoke used at the weekend, employing Delap to make long throws into the box consistently and no surprises, Arsenal conceded two scrappy off his throw ins. Against Fulham, they concede from the corner, as with games against Hull and Bolton.

Sure, I might sound a little bit harsh, every team is susceptible during set-pieces, its usually the way a smaller team is able to beat a bigger team, but let’s face it, there is a disturbing pattern developing at Arsenal and its happening more often than not. We often have our hearts skipping a beat or two when the opposition team gets a set piece, unfortunately for the Arsenal fan, set pieces are enough to cause a heart attack these days.

The second problem is that there is too much overconfidence, letting players shoot from outside the box. Too much space is being given and Arsenal are being punished. Look at the Sunderland and Hull games, wonderful shots from outside the box. Sure, on a good day they would have gone over the bar and Arsenal would be blameless right now, but they should have been closed down by the defenders, regardless.

The thing that should make an Arsenal fan sick, is the Spurs match. Many argue that Spurs deserved the point, which is true, but look at all four goals closely. Arsenal let Spurs shoot from long range for each of the four goals. I am being a little bit harsh, but think about it, four long range goals conceded in one night. Either they were unlucky, the other team was very good, or Arsenal’s defending was bad. I think it was a combination of all those factors.

So there you have it, each of the games Arsenal has dropped points and it nearly always comes down to those two weaknesses. What are Gallas, Toure and Silvestre doing? What is wrong with the centre backs?

When Arsene Wenger didn’t go out and spend big on experienced players in the transfer window, he was criticised. However, he continually stated that his young squad were good enough. I believe him, but he needs to have a serious think about these defensive issues. The attack is fine, we’ve seen goals galore in some games, but in the games they are losing, I think they’re losing confidence and so the attackers aren’t scoring goals.

A defensive midfielder like Flamini is needed to fill in the void in front of the back four and stop those long range shots. The centre backs need to get their act together or Wenger needs to buy new ones. They simply cannot afford to let in these silly goals.

A tough week is ahead. Fenerbache on Wednesday and Manchester United on Saturday. United will probably be the litmus test for this Arsenal side. These inconsistent results are inconclusive. Are Arsenal true title contenders or are they just going for a Champions League spot? We will find out on Saturday if they are the real deal.

Give’em what they want.

Every issue of your newsletter should be relevant to your niche. In many cases, this will mean segmenting your list and sending different mailings based on individual preferences.

Readers who have responded to a particular article in the past can be segmented from the non-responders; people who have clicked a particular ad can be sent a follow up notice; etc.

Why A 2010 World Cup Prediction Doesn’t Require Rocket Science

 The World Cup draw in Durban is only 400 days away now! I thought it’d be a good opportunity to think about which teams names will be in those little balls to be drawn out for the groups for 2010. Here are my predictions and why I think each team should be there:

(the UEFA section will be done later, it is the longest and hardest one)

AFC - Australia, Japan, Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia

& Iran. These are the best five teams in Asia. I don’t think there can be many objections. Uzbekistan or Bahrain will probably get into the playoff spot but they are likely to be overpowered by Saudi Arabia/Iran/Korea Republic. Two of the three teams mentioned will qualify automatically, the other will playoff and smash New Zealand.

CAF - Cameroon, Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana & Cote d’Ivoire

The final round for the CAF has taken shape. Five groups of four, with the top team in each group to qualify. Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire should not have any excuses not to qualify, they have relatively easy groups. Cameroon and Nigeria have tricky groups with Cameroon having to tackle Morocco and Togo, whilst the Nigerians have to face recent World Cup regulars Tunisia. Ghana have the threat of Mali to deal with but I think they’ll have too much quality.

CONCACAF - Mexico, USA & Costa Rica. There is quite a gulf between these three nations and the rest of CONCACAF, and its been obvious for the last ten years. They’ll get through easily, but the fourth placed team will lose the playoff, the South American team will be way too strong.

CONMEBOL - Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay &

Chile. The first three are the “usual suspects” and will definitely be there. Uruguay are looking good and will probably also be there this time, after the disappointment of not making Germany 2006. Ecuador, who usually have been World Cup regulars have had a slower start than usual. Their away form has been terrible which is in contrast to Chile, whose away form has been sound, so I’ve tipped them ahead of Ecuador. Whoever comes fifth will beat the CONCACAF qualifier in the playoff.

The UEFA qualifiers will be analyzed in another article in the future since it is too early to make a reasonable prediction. Overall, it seems that most of the teams that will be there in 2010 will be pretty much the same ones that fought it out in Germany 2 years ago. However, previous World Cups have shown that there are always first timers. Hence, surprises should expected when most qualifiers resume in 2009.

In that article I chose to focus entirely on researching the marketplace through what other businesses have done and are doing. Now Im going to focus on the second method, which is researching directly through your customers.

With a focus like this your goal is going to be to figure out just what your customers want. This is entirely about them and their needs, along with figuring out the best way to appeal to them.

This is about direct surveys and other methods for talking to them. Combine newsletter printing with a direct request to find out more about your customers.

There are some primary and important differences to take note of between this and researching what other companies are doing. Odds are good when you see an ad from another company theyve already done their research and analyzed it to get the best results. By researching your customers directly youre going to get a lot of raw data that youll then need to analyze yourself.

This takes a lot more work to do, but on the other hand, youll naturally get better and more specific results. Even if you know another company had success with a previous marketing push, do you know that the same marketing technique would work again? That it would work specifically with your customers?

Only by researching your customers can you gain answers like this.

Going off of the suggestion of newsletter printing, send out a newsletter asking them about what kinds of advertisements they prefer. Ask them directly if theyve liked your previous marketing pushes, or if theyve seen something they particularly like. Have a section of your newsletter dealing with an ad watch, where people just mention stuff they enjoyed from any company.

At the same time try to find out what your customers enjoy doing in their free time. What their hobbies are, along with other things they like, maybe certain images or certain themes.

Some of this can be gained by seeing what they do in their free time. See what the other places are that they go in to shop at.

What youll end up with is a lot of various pieces of information, and it will then becomes up to you to figure out not only what your marketing message should be based on this, but how you should present it. Will this be a short message that can fit on postcards or a longer one that needs brochures?

The downside is the additional work you have ahead of you, but the upside is that you get very precise and focused marketing, and that you can use this information again in the future. It might take longer to get, but youre setting up a firm foundation for your marketing.
